VBUG: Getting Back to basics: Semantics, Micro formats & the Art of Simplicity
Date: Wed 28 November to Wed 28 November 2007
Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR
Overview: Getting Back to basics with Ian Lloyd: In these days of Rapid Application Development (RAD), .NET controls and WYSIWYG editors, it's easy to forget that for many people, it all started with the humble notepad.exe. The art of creating clean, simple and meaningful markup is becoming more difficult thanks to the tools that supposedly help in developing quicker solutions. Ian will be looking at where we find ourselves today, and looking at the issues that have come about through the use of RAD tools, including the problems with AJAX, accessibility oversights and trying to find where the semantic markup is hiding. This will be a reminder of some of the fundamentals of web development that have been masked by layer upon layer of shiny development tools.

DotNetDevNet: ADO.NET Entity Framework and Microsoft Codename "Astoria"
Date: Tue 13 November to Tue 13 November 2007
Topic: THIRD PARTY MEETING
Overview: Abstract for ADO.NET Entity Framework presented by James Winters - The Entity Framework is way more than just another ORM, it is an extremely flexible way to interact with any persistence store. Although it's not shipping with Orcas, it will be available some time in early 2008 and you need to get to grips with it. In this session I'll examine the framework and show you how to get to grips with it. Abstract for Microsoft Codename "Astoria" presented by Guy Smith Ferrier - The emergence of Web 2.0 technologies has brought new opportunities and caused us to solve old problems in new ways. AJAX and Silverlight applications need read/write access to data and business objects without performing full page refreshes and without dumbing down the data so much we are just left with primitives. Microsoft's answer to this problem is Microsoft Codename "Astoria". In short "Astoria" is a data access layer for client-size technologies such as AJAX and Silverlight. This session shows how it works, how you can write "Astoria" data servers and how you can customize "Astoria" to your applications requirements.
